SMF CHARACTER APPLICATION

Part I: General Information
Name:  lyn

Email address: lynstraine AT gmail DOT com

Part II: Character Information
Character Name: Dante Vincenzo Chiesa.  Dante is a thinly veiled reference to Dante Alighieri, author of La Divina Commedia, but it's also from the Italian for "enduring."  Vincenzo is from the word "to conquer" and Chiesa is the Italian word for "church." It doesn't work as a cohesive sentence, but it's chock full of ironic religious references XD (Vincenzo working as both a reference to his domination issues and a Saint's name, generally required of Catholics.  The Saint's name, that is.  Not the domination issues.)

Character Position: P.R. guy for Jade Dragon Enterprises by day; Elemental Huo by night; enormous whore all the time.

Birthdate and Age: August 7, age 22.  He's a Leo with a Sagittarius moon and a Scorpio ascendant.

Profile:

Likes:
Art: Dante has an aesthetic eye, and he's fond of all things beautiful, particularly classical beauty (like that found in Renaissance paintings and ancient Roman sculpture), but he's all right with modern art to an extent: he prefers concrete pictures to abstract, so a canvas of nothing but blue or an installation of a trash mountain doesn't really move him.  However, he does like intricate patterns and details (of the sort he paints himself), so he enjoys works of that nature.  He also likes love poetry, with his favorite authors being Petrarch, John Donne, and Pablo Neruda.  His favorite composers include Monteverdi, Beethoven, Stravinsky (particularly the Rite of Spring), Bach, Handel, and Debussy.  One of his favorite operas is the Coronation of Poppea, but he is rather fond of opera in general.

Attention: LOOK AT ME ONLY ME PLZ KTHNX.  Dante has a rather desperate need to be the focal point of a situation, with certain rare exceptions (i.e. whenever Yu Huang is about), which is one reason why he likes living in Japan: as a tall Italian man, he stands out.

Control: Goes hand in hand with the attention bit--not only does he want you to keep your eyes fixed solely on him, but he wants to direct the rest of your movements, as well.  Preferably so that they are very, very close to him, if you happen to be a sexy lady.

Women in General: They are lovely, they are beguiling, they are necessary, they are fascinating.

Miscellaneous likes: a woman's skin (the softer, the better), wine, white sauces, steaks served rare, fresh tomatoes, violin concertos, the humanities, satin sheets, Armani suits, rosaries, elaborate architecture, stained glass windows, the air right before a thunderstorm, fractals

Dislikes:

Women in General: They are wicked, they are tempters, they are worthless, they are cruel.

Being Ignored: It is best to respond when Dante speaks to you if you want to keep all of your limbs intact, particularly these days.  Nothing sends him into a rage like the cold shoulder, from anyone (haha, cold).

Being Mocked: Although he's quite good at pretending to be the charming, easy-going guy, if he senses that you are seriously deriding him then he will change from friendly to scary in .02 seconds (like he does).  He hates it if he thinks someone's playing a game with him, and tends to react violently to any suspicions thereof.

Guilt: Which is too bad, because his heart is coated with it in many thick, gelatinous layers.  It surfaces in regular waves, but usually when he's confronted with evidence of his own psychosis (such as seeing burn marks he inflicted on someone's skin the day after the altercation), and when he hears a woman crying--but the difference between the two situations is that the former causes him to fall into a pathetic sort of depression, while the latter just makes him even angrier.

Miscellaneous dislikes: filth, thin noodles, rough fabrics, large dogs, singing hymns, cheap food, sermons

Hobbies:

Unf: When he's not glassworking or buying new suits, he's probably engaged in unf or looking for someone with whom to engage in unf.  As this is the nature of his illness, this particular hobby is expounded upon more in Personality.

Glassmaking: Dante loves shaping glass into various shapes, though he specializes in making tiny, intricately detailed tear bottles, which he handcrafts and paints.  He's fond of making them as gifts, so expect the ladiez to receive several at various points, likely with disturbing notes written in Italian attached XD;

Personal Hygiene: A consummate metrosexual, Dante keeps himself well-groomed and dressed.  Yes, he uses a loofah on his feet.  Yes, he has body wash.  YES HE WEARS RIBBONS IN HIS HAIR SOMETIMES (manly ribbons, though).

Cooking: He's not Emeril or anything, but Dante is rather handy in the kitchen.  He's in the process of learning some Japanese dishes, but he still prefers Italian cuisine.  He makes a mean tiramisu n_n

Miscellaneous hobbies: perusing art exhibits, patronizing strip clubs & regular bars, wine tasting, collecting antique vases

Description: This should be a general description of what this character looks like; please include not only hair and eye color but also general facial features, usual clothing, and build. You may enclose an image if you desire; however, there must also be text here.

Eyes: Pale blue, on account of his lightly colored northern Italian mum, they contrast strikingly with the rest of his features.

Face and Skin: Dante's skin is olive colored (and please believe that he would go to a tanning bed if it weren't naturally this shade), and he has a sharp, defined nose and chin, with relatively full lips for man (he is a bit girly, admittedly).  His left ear is pierced; generally he wears small ruby or diamond studs.

Hair: Dante usually keeps his long (it falls to his mid-back), slightly wavy, black hair pulled back into a ponytail, but if he's feeling lazy he lets it go loose.  Dante takes very good care of his hair, and has its split ends trimmed regularly.

Build: Tall (about 6'1) and lean, Dante also works out at least once every week.  Physically he is moderately strong; he doesn't have much real fighting experience but he can lift his own weight (and he mostly uses force against wee girls anyway >_>), which is no small feat given his height.

Carriage: Dante walks in long strides with a confident, welcoming gait: he appears very friendly and approachable, despite often being the tallest guy in the room.

Voice: A low baritone, and colored with an unabashed Italian accent that surfaces mostly in a few verbal tics--he tends to add more syllables to words than necessary, for example (though the only word to which he attaches an extra 'o' is 'or' n_n)--he would prounounce Lucien's name like Lu-chee-en, emphasizing the 'ci' sound where it wouldn't be in the smoother French pronounciation.  He'll also slur his 's' sound and roll his 'r's.

Personality:

Dante is the classic Italian ladies' man gone terribly wrong.  He is charming, gregarious, and gives gifts generously, but he's also easily cruel, prone to violence, short tempered, and, of course, not just a little bit insane.

First, let's address the nature of his illness, which is satyriasis, better known today as hypersexuality.  Hypersexuality is defined by an uncontrollable compulsion to engage in frequent sexual behaviors that afford the sufferer no satisfaction.  It's a controversial affliction, and doctors disagree about whether the cause is biological or pyschological, though in Dante's case it's certainly more of the latter.  Generally it stems from a desire to sate an unsatiable need, often one completely separate from anything sexual.  For Dante, it is specifically the desire to control everything around him, to subjugate it lest it becomes overwhelming.  This desire is tied up in his subscription stand of issues with womenz, whom he both loves and hates.

These issues are best expressed in his relationships with women, which, as you might be able to guess, tend to be short, sexual, and often ultimately upsetting for both of them.  True to form, while Dante does enjoy the feel-good chemical release of sex, this feeling fades soon after the act is over, leaving him empty and depressed until the need for more resurfaces--sometimes a day, sometimes mere hours later.  He is a playa, to be sure, but he is not a particularly happy one.  He pretends to have women figured out, and he uses these conclusions to justify himself whenever he uses force against a woman putting up resistance, namely the classic "all women want it regardless of what they say" defense.  To him, a no is always a veiled yes, and a woman pulling away from his embrace is only playing hard to get.  When he becomes violent, he blames the woman, telling himself that if she had only submitted to him then he would not have had to hurt her.

Not that Dante always needs to use force; in fact he is rather good at avoiding it, generally, being that he is a handsome, charming foreign man who peppers his speech with endearing Italian phrases X3; But it happens often enough to be a problem, because Dante requires a lot from a woman, and if his expectations aren't meant his temper is quickly lost.  First and foremost, she must pay attention to him and only to him.  If her gaze wanders to any other men in the bar, he will become irritated, to the point of even catching her chin and pulling her back to him.  Ignoring him is an even more dire offense.  If he is rebuffed immediately (for example, if a dialogue goes "Can I buy you a drink?" and the woman replies "No, thanks"), he will move on, but if the woman doesn't even answer him then it's trouble for her n_n;;  This desire for attention is not particular to his relationships with women; it's a broad need that manifests itself in every social situation he's in, whether with males or females--but, of course, it's especially aggravating if it's a woman shrugging him off.  He's also not too keen on any detections of mocking: though he is skilled at the light-hearted front, if he notices any serious derision, then this, too, is cause for his temper to flare (har, flare).  But Dante hates his own predilection for violence, and takes steps to prevent it, in the form of pliability enhancing drugs added to a feisty prospect's drink -__-; (or, alternatively, simply buying her so much that the effect is much the same) Again, the need for these kinds of measures is not always present--the point is that he isn't above stooping to them to satisfy his compulsion.

Dante's relationships rarely last more than a a few days, perhaps a week or two at best, until he either needs someone new or he frightens the woman off (or some combination of the two) with his crazebeastliness.  However, he often buys presents for those he sees for more than two or three days, and extravagant ones at that--clothes, flowers, jewelry, and the tearbottles he makes himself.  Ultimately, it's just more ammunition--"I BOUGHT HER NICE THINGS WHY DOES SHE NOT DO EVERYTHING I WANT" etc.  Since gaining his powers of burnination, his shaky mental state has worsened, given that he now has the ability to burn off skin, should he so choose.  However, nothing fills him with guilt faster than the sight of a burn mark he's left on someone's skin, and, directly after the event, his mental state is so off-kilter so as to send him into a brief period of jibbering delirium, crushed under the immediate wave of guilt and dismay.  Guilt is itself an integral part of his character, mostly stemming from his deep religious roots.  Dante was raised Catholic, and he remains so, though obviously he is not very good at it.

Even so, the vestiges of his religion are what keep him at least somewhat reined in, and prevent him from commiting unspeakable atrocities (not that his current level of morality is anything to be proud of at all). He still goes to church, and confession, every week, though his more recent confessions have been very disturbing to his priest (he tries to put it off to Dante's obvious mental delusion; surely it is not possible that a human being could burn off another human's fingerprints through skin contact alone).  He does his penances with his rosary as well, and will turn to the Bible for solace, and sometimes in effort to control himself from going out yet again seeking yet another anonymous partner.  Sadly it does not work very often, but, he tries n_n;

To say that Dante is a good person would be an untruth, but to say that he is devoid of any humanity or empathy would be similarly false.  On the contrary, he has some idea that the things he does are wrong, and that he's causing unnecessary suffering, hence the massive surges of guilt that visit him regularly.  But it's not enough to make him stop, partly because he is indeed mentally imbalanced, and partly because his way of thinking about women does include some amount of dehumanization.  His relationships with men are far less complicated, though it's not as if he thinks other men are all that fabulous, either--but they don't tempt him the way women do.  His perception is so warped that he can even convince himself that women actually like the physical abuse he doles out (see his history for more on where that line of thinking developed)--though this notion is challenged if ever he hears a woman crying.  This above all things he cannot stand, at least, not if he knows that he's the cause of the tears.  It both fills him with guilt and sends him into a rage, to the point where he'll do almost anything to make the sound stop.

Rage is another key component of his personality, and it's this rage that probably led to his problem with sexual addiction in the form of redirected energy.  Though he puts up a good front, in reality, Dante is angry/upset all the time, at some level of consciousness.  He's angry with his mother, he's angry with his father, he's angry with the Church, he's angry with everybody and everything, and coupled with that anger and that guilt is also fear--fear that these other feelings will consume him, much like the powers of fire he's recently been granted.  Dante has a terrible, irrational notion that eventually the anger inside him will reach a point where it will literally destroy him and all those in his immediate vicinity, and part of his compulsion stems from his subconscious efforts to redirect that uncontrollable energy.

But what about that front?  When he is out in public, Dante is light hearted and engaging.  Many people find him easy to talk to, as he seems easy going and open minded.  He speaks frankly, but with decorum, and he's always quick to compliment and ask questions.  This persona crumbles once he's been angered, but he's usually able to keep himself in check when he's out and about--it's when he's alone with someone that his real instability shows through.  However, it's not as if these traits of kindness and gentleness exist only as false pretenses.  He can be genuinely kind, and he can be genuinely gentle, it's just that these things are often drowned and lost amidst his other, baser emotions.  The fact that, as Huo, he now has a license to pretty much let loose on certain groups of people isn't really helping him get back to his softer side, either XD;

History:
Like most people, Dante was born naked, covered in blood, and screaming.  Unfortunately things did not improve much after that.

He lived on the island of Murano, near Venice, known for its exquisite glassmaking.  His grandfather, Paolo Chiesa, moved there with his wife from Pompei to pursue this and other arts, but their son grew up more interested in business than in art.  Dante's father, Renato, profited from the eventual fame and moderate fortune of Paolo's glass and other artworks, as he eventually grew to handle all of his grandfather's monetary affairs and those of many other Murano artists.  He made his living handling the business aspect of various glassmakers' work on Murano, and married a native woman of the island, a fair-haired, blue eyed woman named Adele.  They married young, and were already having marital issues when Adele became pregnant with Dante.  They did not divorce, both for his sake and because, being strict Catholics, their religion and community still looked down on the idea.

Thus, Dante was born into the midst of increasing marital turmoil, because his dad was kind of a jerk and his mom was kind of a doormat.  These conditions worsened as Dante aged, because his father began to drink more than just the usual glass of wine with dinner, and by the time Dante was five, he beat Adele in drunken rages on a regular basis.  Dante witnessed this, and he also witnessed that his mother never fought back, nor cried in front of him--instead she hid in the bathroom, and he heard her sobbing through the door.  These episodes helped form his perceptions of men, women, and the relationships between them, as well as his intense dislike of the sound of a woman's tears.  In addition to these domestic disturbances, Dante's local priest was hardcore oldschool, and gave fire and brimstone sermons on the evils of eating, drinking, and breathing--and the tempting wiles of women.

He took solace in Paolo, who encouraged his grandson's artistic nature and interested him in the art of glassmaking.  Paolo often made little glass and wooden baubles for Dante, carefully painted and shaped into various kinds of animals (Dante liked ponies best).  However, Paolo died when Dante was seven, a loss that shattered him in ways he was too young to understand.  Paolo's absence made his homelife that much more difficult, but yet another drastic change was on the horizon.  While the priest's dogma further cemented Dante's growing neuroses about women, the truly solidifying event happened when he was around thirteen.   He returned home from school one day, calling hello to her as he always did, but he received no response.  When he reached the kitchen he found not the usual plate of milk and cookies, but a note in her handwriting with just one hastily scribbled word: "Arrivederci." Adele decided that it was time to leave, and she had no plans of taking Dante with her.  He never could fathom why she left him behind, unsure if it was because she wanted to escape the situation she'd gotten herself into entirely or if she just hated him, but either way, she had abandoned him.

His father, no longer having his mother as a punching bag, turned his ire towards his son.  Dante suffered both physical and mental abuse, but the latter more than the former--Renato wanted his son to become a businessman like him, and attempted to groom him as such despite frequently berating the boy.  Of course, much of this conflict arose from the fact that Dante did not want to be a businessman, having always been interested in the arts.  He loved to hang around the glassmakers' studios in Murano, most of whom had known his grandfather.  They taught him how to use their tools and techniques, and it was through this informal apprenticeship that Dante learned the basics of glassmaking.  He tried to keep it secret from his father, who put increasing pressure on Dante's academics as he aged.  Fortunately, being an intelligent boy, Dante made good grades and was usually able to avoid questions about where he went after school--but when his compulsory education ended, at age 14, his father pushed him into pursuing a technical education.  He rejected Dante's bid to continue his schooling in the arts, despite endorsements from local glassmakers that Dante showed promise and talent.  However, he eventually relented, as it reached the point where he stood to lose clientele if he did not allow his son to make his own choice.

But, as you may imagine, this course of events ever more embittered Renato, and he treated Dante with undisguised contempt, constantly lecturing him on how he was wasting his life.  Dante dealt with this by spending as little time at home as possible: when he was not in the glassmakers' workshops, he was working odd jobs or going out with girls.  He really liked going out with girls, and they liked going out with him--that is, until he lost his temper with them and slapped them, of course.  Dante lost his virginity when he was 15, but the constant compulsion for sexual activity did not reach its peak until 18, when he was out with a new girl every other night.  Needless to say, his father didn't much like this habit, and the abuse took on a new dimension--which, of course, just made Dante angrier, and increased his desire to be out and away, channeling that rage elsewhere.

 Dante managed to persevere until university by losing himself in his studies, but the stress of higher education plus the unceasing disgust of his father eventually became too much for him to bear--that, and his mental instability had now reached potent levels.  He dropped out of school before he took his final degree examination, and, at age 20, decided it was time to leave not only his father but Italy in general.  Using the money he earned from his jobs, he traveled around Europe for a while, eventually deciding to go to Japan because he actually knew the language better than most of the other Romance languages--his father had insisted he take it while in school, given the business acumen of the Japanese.  As with all things chosen by his father, Dante resisted at first, but he actually enjoyed the calligraphic style of Japanese writing (to this day he is actually better at writing Japanese than he is at speaking it).  Besides which, having learned some about Japan over the course of studying the language, he was under the impression that their stratified, well ordered society might do him some good in terms of settling his restless, psychotic soul (too bad he never came across anything about their lively sex industries in his textbooks). Thus, he went to Tokyo, and it was there that he met Yu-Huang, while working as a waiter in a bar.  As with his other disciples, Yu-Huang promised to give Dante what he wanted: the ability to control, to take.  With Yu-Huang, Dante could have women, wealth, and a workshop of his own, just as long as he agreed to serve faithfully.  Dante accepted, and handed over his starseed readily: now he works as the Public Relations guy for JDE, promoting whatever facade Yu-Huang sets out for him, eager to get with and then get rid of all the hot senshi ladiez <3

NPCs:
Father Nanashi: This is the priest Dante sees every week for Confession.  A gentle, middle-aged man, Father Nanashi doesn't quite know what to do with the strange foreigner who sits behind the screen every Sunday talking about how he inflicted third degree burns on uppity prostitutes and spiked the drinks of pretty young women and had impure thoughts pretty much every second of every day.  He puts off the more grostesque of Dante's confessions to fantasy, having gathered that Dante is Not All There mentally, but sometimes he wonders if he should do more than assign him penances, like maybe call the police.

Part III: Soldier Information
Special Skills:

Wine-tasting: Hey, he is good at it, as mentioned briefly in the hobbies XD Dante has an appreciation for fine wines, and often orders vintage bottles out of a catalogue that imports them from Italy.

Hot Body: He's hot blooded, check it and see!  Got a fever of a 1003!  Dante can raise his body heat to dangerous heights, hot enough to melt someone's head clear off their neck, in fact.  The reason why he doesn't go around engaging in said head melting is that using this ability tends to upset his mental equilibrium even moreso than it already is: a combination of guilt over using such a terrible power and the way it literally cooks his brain turn him into a jibbering mess for a short while if he uses this power in any extreme degree--such as burning a hole in someone's skin, for example.

General Burnination/Pyromancy: Dante can create small fireballs in his hand, which can be increased in size with the aid of other fire or fire-creating substances, particularly oil (you don't want to fight Huo near a gas station), as he has the ability to ignite such flammable substances.  In this manner he can also draw fire 'out' of something--i.e., he can take a lighter and pull out of its fire potential for his own use.  Once created, he can manipulate it in various pain-inducing ways.

Psychotic Artist-type: Although he never achieved a professional level, Dante is quite good at his glassmaking, and he's also fond of painting and sketching in general (though glassmaking by far is what he does best).  As mentioned before, expect the senshi to receive disturbing tear bottle gifts XD;

Multi-lingual: I figure this is pretty standard among the diverse Elementals, but Dante speaks Italian, English, and Japanese, and he's quite good with his Latin and Greek, given that he went to private Catholic schools for his compulsory education and these languages were emphasized there.

Powers:
Boiling Earth: Dante creates fissures in the earth's surface for this power, summoning up bubbling molten rock from way deep down.  Magma seeps out of the fissures as they grow larger and larger, until the entirety of his chosen area has split open to reveal what look to be the innards of a mini-volcano.  He can then cause variably sized eruptions of rock and fire for a tasty senshi fricassee, or direct the path of the magma in various directions, including up into the air like a waterspout.  Generally he chooses to do this underneath the area where his targets are standing, but it's fairly easy to get out of the way before the ground splits open entirely and the danger of falling in becomes real, as the cracking asphalt would be a good signal to move XD;

Magma Armor: For this, Dante summons the magma from the earth directly below him, so that the ground breaks and rocks and lava spout forth to encase his body.  Depending on how much time the magma has to cool, it will form into either zircon, topaz, or ruby, with ruby being the strongest, forming after five minutes, and zircon being the weakest, forming after one.  The process stops when he is attacked, so, if he's attacked five minutes after beginning the process, the attack will hit the ruby armor, and if he's attacked one minute after, it will hit the zircon armor.  Though this power requires a specific time condition, once formed, all three types of armor are fairly powerful.  Obviously, the zircon type is easiest to break through, but even it requires extensive magical pummeling.  The ruby armor is nearly impossible to crack, the topaz a little less so (being that the gems have not just their natural hardnesses but are fortified with Magical Evil).

Summon: Magma Imps: Think of wee, evil cherubs with fangs, bat wings, tridents, and a lower half made of fire.  Dante can summon these guys in small packs (about six at a time) from the bowels of the earth.  They're quick and nasty, tending to divebomb opponents with their fire-spitting tridents, but, if you can hit them, they're not hard to kill at all.  A water attack is the most effective, of course, but any sort of direct bonk is enough to send them back to where they came from (excepting another fire attack, which would make them stronger)--it's just that they flit around so fast that it's hard to get a lock on'em.

Fuku: Jigga what n_n Dante fights senshi in a fancy suit, with the alchemical symbol for fire burning on his forehead.

Henshin: NO HENSHIN SCORE BEING EVIL ROCKS

Part IV: Other Information
RP Experience: This setup does seem somewhat familiar!

Connections:
Trin: Aggressor x enabler OTP XD; No, seriously, he'll be on Trin like white on rice, as she is Hot (perhaps not in the traditional sense like Li-Nian, but Dante does have a real appreciation for all types of feminine beauty), and he'll quickly realize that she is not going to Tell on him for groping her in the hallways and various other forms of sexual assault n_n;  Once he discovers how she folds like a house of cards, he'll probably make it his personal duty to make most of her decisions for her, up and including eating and bathing habits n_n; As with all women he's interested in, he will also likely give her many presents, but also subject her to much abuse in various forms.  Her general ability to endure this sort of thing will not be helpful in changing his conception of women, but at the same time it might also eventually be the key to his realizing that, hey, maybe women DON'T like it when they're coerced and slapped, since the one woman that always takes it is also the woman who stabs herself with needles on a regular basis and never cries for anything.  He will have real affection for her, but it will be bound up in his psychobeast tendencies, unfortunately.  Their relationship will be complicated and fucked up, in summation XD;

Eugene: It's hard to say, because they have some common ground in that they both like art and Eugene might possibly be interested in Dante's glass work (given that he uses the techniques of the masters in Murano), and the fact that Dante is pretty much a quivering bundle of emotion, but at the same time I doubt Eugene will like Dante's violent tendencies, should he see them in action (it is possible that he might not, as Dante is good at holding back in public).  Similarly, Dante always likes a fellow art enthusiast, but he'll be very creeped out by Eugene's particular brand of personal artistry, and will likely see his gentleness as unsettling rather than calming.

Li-Nian: She's smoking hot, so naturally he will also be on her like white on rice, particularly if he realizes that she is not going to Tell.  However, his relationship with Li-Nian would be a bit simpler than his relationship with Trin, given that Li-Nian will likely not attempt to provoke him or resist him.  Even so, something she does will eventually make him angry, just because he's a temperamental psychobeast, and since she's the crying sort...let's just say that won't go well at all n_n; In addition, he'll still see her as The Boss's Daughter and thus nominally off-limits, but that doesn't mean he won't make amorous advances on occasion anyway--because, again, smoking hot (her) and no willpower (him).

Lucien: Another that's hard to say.  It's possible that they'll annoy each other, but it's also possible that they could be something like buddies, although I doubt they'd be going on male-bonding camping trips any time soon.  As Lyko said, they could fight over ladiez XD Dante will be impressed by Lucien's dedication to a task, but he might be put off or even angered by his persistent unfriendliness.  Both of them have a tendency to redirect blame, as well, which could potentially cause conflict, though Dante's habit of blame-shifting is more specifically focused n_n;

Miscellaneous: I realize that Dante has the potential to be incredibly scary, but please to be assured that I will try hard to make sure he only makes characters uncomfortable, not players n_n;; Also special thanks to Laris for letting me inflict Dante on Trin while writing this application and beyond, and for proofing the application and offering ideas (such as using magmatic gems as armor <3).
